JACK CHIPMAN Los Angeles artist Jack Chipman is a graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute (now Cal-Arts) in Los Angeles and has exhibited his abstract paintings, collages and witty assemblages throughout California and abroad. His rippings series began in San Francisco in the 1970s soon after graduation from art school. At that time artist friend Lynn Hershman, writing for ARTWEEK, dubbed him “Jack the Ripper.” The paintings were called rippings because they were ripped into strips of various widths after completion and then reassembled into brand-new configurations. Some were reattached to their original stretcher frames while others were hung from mock stretcher bars at a level where the ends did not touch the floor. Knute Stiles, in an ART IN AMERICA review, wrote: “The rhythms and accidents, like the grain of wood (or the surge of the sea), are perhaps the magic factors—the intuitive aspects that give these pieces their commanding presence.” Chipman’s latest series of acrylic paintings is titled “Afterlife.” The title not only reinforces the series’ reference to the premature pronouncement of the demise of painting but also suggests that there’s an alternative to the entrenched notion in the West that we have only one life to live—an absurd idea when you actually take the time to consider it. Believers and non-believers alike may discern a cosmic allusion in the new paintings. This was not deliberate but rather a consequence of allowing the work to unfold with little conscious interference on the artist’s part. Still, creation reveals the creator. Chipman believes that what people have long referred to as “heaven” or “paradise” IS out there—way out there on the other side of the universe and is a much larger and entirely different (better) world than the one we have created here on planet Earth.
